A recent report revealing that King Charles III and the British Royals are set to receive a whopping £38 million pay rise has brewed a massive discussion on social media.

King Charles III and the monarchy is set to receive a massive pay rise beginning in 2025. Details about the said pay hike came to light in a royal funding review published by the Treasury on Thursday, July 20. The review revealed that the British royals grant will go up from £86m to £125m. The revelation has stirred up a conversation on social media as the news breaks amid the cost of living crisis in England.

British Royals get £38m pay rise amid cost of living crisis

At present the monarchy’s grant stands at £86.3m and has remained roughly the same for the past two years as per the Treasury’s release. However, in 2025, the British royals will receive a whopping £124.8m which is £38.5m more than the present grant. Moreover, in 2026, their exact annual stipend will be £126m.

For the unversed, the royal grant is worked out by the profits the crown brings from its estates. It’s all things owned by the crown including property, off-shore wind farms, and more. The Treasury has emphasized the fact that the monarchy has cut its 25% owed grant to almost half at 12%. However, despite the reduction the royals stand to gain nearly £40m.

Amid the report, it is also important to note that there is a ‘golden ratchet’ clause in the Sovereign Grant Act. It states that the amount of money given to a monarch can never decrease, even if the profits from the crown estate decline. Hence, this has caused concerns among the public about whether the royal grant will remain over £125m starting in 2025.

What Royal reps have said about the pay hike

Buckingham Palace and the Treasury did not dispute the pay increase when contacted by The Guardian. However, the royals’ representatives commented on whether it was appropriate for King Charles to receive increased pay amid the economic crisis in the UK.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson reportedly pointed out that the sovereign grant stood at £86m for years prior. The spokesperson mentioned how it’s a pay cut when compared with the rising inflation. The palace has also called the pay hike “temporary, only for the financial years of 2025-6 and 2026-7.”

She further mentioned that it will be used to complete renovation works at Buckingham Palace.

Celebrity TidBit and GRV Media contacted King Charles III’s representatives asking if the grant will reduce starting in 2027 or if will it remain the same given the clause in the Sovereign Grant Act. We also asked about the royal families’ loose plans for spending the money. However, we did not receive an immediate response.
