Harry Styles' viral Gucci dress moment slammed by TV star - 'no sacrifice'
Harry Styles’ huge career moment where he wore a Gucci dress on the front cover of Vogue has been slammed by a TV star years later.
Harry Styles graced the cover of Vogue in 2020 wearing a Gucci dress. It was the music star’s first solo cover on the prestigious magazine and was celebrated by the majority of his fans. However, years later, TV star Billy Porter is regurgitating his mixed feelings over the celebrity photoshoot and has slammed it once again.
Harry Styles’ Gucci dress – “You haven’t had to sacrifice anything’
In December 2020, singer Harry Styles wore a custom-made Gucci dress. Designed by Alessandro Michele, head of Gucci, it received backlash from some conservative critics. But it elevated the conversation about sexuality, race, and gender roles.
It was praised online, and social media like Twitter, for going against the grain of gender norms in fashion. Although he wasn’t the first male celebrity to wear a dress, it pushed it into more of a global scale. He was also likened to music legends like Iggy Pop or David Bowie who had been bending these restrictions for years.
But Billy Porter has reiterated how he feels about the situation. He told the Telegraph that although it pushed the conversation the right way, Harry didn’t have to “sacrifice anything”.
“It’s not Harry Styles’ fault that he happens to be white and cute and straight and fit into the infrastructure that way,” Billy said.
“It doesn’t feel good to me. You’re using my community — or your people are using my community — to elevate you. You haven’t had to sacrifice anything.”
Billy was taken aback by Vogue’s editor

The Emmy Award winner wasn’t happy with Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, either. He said he was taken aback when she asked him what they should have ‘done better’ afterward.
Billy explained he wished he said something to Anna at the time. He explained what that would be: “Use your power as Vogue to uplift the voices of the leaders of this de-gendering of fashion movement.”
“Six months later, Harry Styles is the first man on the cover,” he added.
It’s not the first time Billy Porter has spoken out. At the time when his book was releasing, Unprotected: A Memoir, he slammed the decision-making behind Harry’s outfit in the shoot.
He said at the time: “He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do. This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars … All he has to do is be white and straight.”
However, Porter later apologized for focusing on Harry during his comments. But it seems it’s been plaguing on his mind ever since, with his recent thoughts.
Hollywood star Harry isn’t afraid of pushing back against certain norms. Commentator Candace Owens tweeted that there was a need to “bring back manly men”. But the Don’t Worry Darling movie star posted a photograph of himself in a frilly fit, while eating a banana, in response.
Harry Styles’ history with fashion

Harry has shown interest in fashion for several years, even back to his One Direction days. In 2012, he attended his first Burberry show at London Fashion Week. The following year he scooped the British Style Award at the British Fashion Awards Show. It’s also where he met his current stylist Harry Lambert in 2014.
By 2020 he was voted as Most Stylish Man Of The Year by GQ. The dress in question was featured at the Victoria and Albert Musuem exhibition in 2022. Within The Art of Menswear’ Exhibition, it was featured next to Billy Porter’s black Christian Siriano gown.
We’re not sure how Porter felt about that, either.
